A New Outlook on an Old Tradition

A Knife for the Lederhose

The traditional lederhosen breeches are more fashionable than ever in the alpine region.

Traditionally, lederhosen were worn for working, hunting, and hiking, and for all of these activities, one thing is essential — the matching knife. This used to be the "Hirschfänger," or "deer catcher", which was kept handy in a small pocket at the right side and used to deliver the killing blow to game.

Nowadays, as the lederhosen has come to be worn during a broader variety of occasions, so too have the knives that accompany it diversified. There are no rigid rules as to what goes in a lederhosen pocket — as long as it is a handy size and suits your taste.
