The amber handle of this knife has been backed with antique tortoiseshell and underlaid with gold leaf.
Tortoiseshell has always been popular in arts and crafts due to its transparency and distinctive darker areas. The gilding achieves a particularly high level of reflection. The hand guard is adorned with a sculpted, finely polished groove.
