Engravings

Make an Impression

An engraving gives every knife that special something. The finished piece bears the personal signature of the engraver as well as that of the knife maker and the customer. This results in truly one-of-a-kind pieces that cannot be reproduced exactly the same way a second time. One of the most popular types of engraving is the monogram. The main tool used in engraving is the “graver,” which looks like a chisel that is 10 times smaller. The graver is clamped into a knob-like holder, and then the work begins.

Just as with the different types of knives, there are also a variety of differences in engraving styles,

which we would like to introduce. Of course, all our knives can be engraved upon request, or you can try your hand at it yourself in one of our engraving courses.

Each engraving is sketched out beforehand and adapted to the size of the piece.&   Engraving is a cutting process—yes, you read that right, “cutting” with an “n”—which means that material is removed from the workpiece. In this case, we’re aiming for “cutting-edge entertainment.”

Flat-engraved design:  Motifs or ornaments are engraved by hand according to a sketch, and the engraved lines are then blackened, e.g., by coloring them with printer's ink. In the case of integral knives, the knife darkens during the hardening process, and the engraving is blackened by the scale layer in the background.

Deep-cut engraving: The motif or ornament remains raised; the background is removed by hand using engraving tools, evenly dotted with a punch, and then blackened.

Engraving with fine gold inlays: The line or motif is engraved, back-carved, and inlaid with fine gold or other precious metals. By hammering with a ball-peen hammer, the material is driven into the back-carved areas and thus holds without glue or other fixatives.

Relief engraving: Here, the motif or ornament is left raised or inlaid with precious metal. The background is often deeply engraved, and the raised element is rendered in relief. These engraved elements appear particularly lifelike; they are also the most labor-intensive type.

Bolino Engraving: The motif or ornament is chiseled into the steel with thousands of tiny dots under a magnifying glass or microscope and applied to the piece like a picture.

In the images, you will find a selection of different types of engravings. We look forward to bringing your ideas to life. If you would like to explore this field yourself, we recommend our engraving courses.
